I was late to work this morning (very nearly this afternoon). I overslept despite two alarms cunningly set to prevent me from doing that very thing. Rather than rush and go without a meal, I telephonically alerted the office that I would be on the later train and would therefore stay later into the evening.

And now I'll be staying later still, because my commuter train, which came 20 minutes late, had barely made it to Swampscott (one stop after Salem; I could have said "barely made it one stop" but the name "Swampscott" deserves mention) when it halted and the conductor announced that the train ahead of us had broken down (*), and that our train was going to be attached to it so that we might push it to Boston.

Hooray.

Well, as it happens, after some fifteen minutes of our sitting there, they announced that our train, too, had broken down, and so we joined the passengers of the first train to wait for a third one (complete with its own passengers).

Now, if a train is delayed more than 30 minutes, one is entitled to a free ride on some future occasion. But by the time I got to North Station, it didn't seem worth the trouble to stand in line with everyone else and get one of those claim forms for three lousy dollars, which I'm sure is something They are counting on.

Musings prompted by a song stuck in my head for no apparent reason: if I should fall, would it really be helpful to remember I almost had it all? I just don't think so.

(*) This means, the astute reader may have realized, that if I had caught the earlier train as intended, I still would not have got to work any earlier. Thus does the universe fail to correct my oversleeping problem.
