How I planned to spend my evening:

Get home around 7:30; either mow the yard or bike over to the supermarket to pick up Cat Chow and a fine aged cheddar, either Grafton or Cabot, of the sort they enclose in wax, to take with me to France to show our Breton friends that, while they are admittedly few, there are decent cheeses in New England (for they had politely doubted, I am told), and the aged cheddar seemed more easily transportable than the Great Hill Blue; pick haricots verts from the garden for my dinner, and eat them; relax online for a bit, maybe play some Warcraft III; pack.

What I did do:

Got home at 7:30 (so far, so good: what with the Green Line it was touch and go there); decided to try to do both the shopping trip and the mowing before dark, so I wouldn't have to do either in the heat of the sun tomorrow; discovered that, absurd as it might seem, one should, when making time-sensitive decisions involving supermarkets, call ahead to make sure they actually have cat food and cheese, even if you have found the desired varieties there on numerous occasions before; tried two more stores -- convenience stores, really -- also both lacking in the cheese (as I guessed; figured they'd only have "Helluva Good" brand, and I was right) and the Cat Chow (was there a massive recall or something?); because of the way my lock works (or doesn't work), the cruelty of gravity, and the paucity of purchasable goods, spent more time locking and unlocking my bike at each of the three locations than I did actually shopping, for I assumed that it was the sort of night when someone would steal my bike if I left it unlocked; came home angry, thinking about time wasted and how I could have gone to one of two major supermarkets near work had I just left early, as could easily have been done, and hating the very sight of my fellow man who is, after all, if I can see him, potentially in my way; got home realizing it was now too late to mow, and so I will have to do this in the sunlight tomorrow; contemplated driving to a store, even though I have no license, and decided not to; picked haricots verts for dinner, and prepared and ate them along with tofu and copious vinho verde (a success!); came upstairs to relax on my computer; found the computer was unable to find its startup device; tried to restart without extensions, and failed; tried to start up from various software CDs, making sure to click the "do not erase my hard drive" options; finally restarted from a less threatening CD and then re-restarted successfully in OS X, putting off the problem of what's up with OS 9.whatever for a future occasion; tried to remember the BU TCP/IP and PPP info necessary to connect to the internet; remembered wrong, and tried again; succeeded; had more wine; wrote this.

Oh, crap, and speaking of feeding cats I meant to get futurenurselady a key (for she is kind and good and a friend to small animals). Botheration. And here's me without one of those unconcincing plastic rocks you can use to hide keys in outside....
