Into my grim morning of missed trains, unreliable buses, being late for work (to find my boss standing around in his coat waiting for me), crashing computers, and bagels dropped uneaten onto muddy boot-betrod tiles comes this cheering quotation (with which I don't entirely agree), from a Professor of Classics participating in a thread on an academic list:

"The one hobbit character to show any signs of maturation is Sam Gamgee, but he has some issues to deal with I think, after going 2 and 3/4 films playing butch to Frodo's femme and then suddenly going home to the shire and making babies one after another with a retired waitress from Hooter's of Hobbiton."

Ow.

I just banged my head on my desk, because I was so weakened by the laughter which I cannot express at work.

I particularly like the alliteration in the phrase "Hooter's of Hobbiton."

"Heh heh. He said "hooters". Heh heh. That was cool, Beavis"

How can he say that? Did he read the books? Or even watch the movie, for crying out loud.

Samwise is already a fairly 'mature' hobbit from the start. Idealistic, yes. But that never changes.

If anyone shows signs of maturing, it's Pippin. In fact, that's one major theme with Peregrin Took. How the dark times and events force this young, care-free hobbit to "grow up". ...and yet, he doesn't become some cynical embittered short man.

It makes my head twitch.

Ha, Beavis and Butthead...
Classic.

It's kind of true that Sam might be a little bit on the gay side.. maybe he's just very secure with himself. ;) Did you notice that the movie had a lot of metrosexual guys? We need look no further than the starring elf. I rather appreciated his pampered good looks, even though the matty-haired and mud splotched Aragorn was more up my alley.
In the books Sam's pretty subservient to Frodo too. Played the part well.
