May. 11th, 2002 03:40 pmSo I was going to wax poetic about how much fun I had last night going to Hell at Man Ray for the first time in a couple of years. And I may do that some other day. But right now all I feel is horrible searing rage at my inability to set up my new iMac in such a way that it is at all compatible with anything Apple-made that I previously own, including data storage devices and software, despite having brought adapters from my office meant for this exact same problem (with the same kinds of computers).
Most recently: I've installed the software for the Zip drive. I've attached the SCSI-to-USB adapter cable and I've even installed the fucking software that you need to install just for the goddamn cable. All I want for it to do is to work just once so I can copy some files and then I don't intend to use the Zip drive again because the converter cable isn't even mine.
So why doesn't it work? And is it cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy a converter cable to attach our perfectly good older one? And why won't LiveJournal allow my browser preference font size overrides so I can read about your lives without going blind, at least as far as the text size goes? And why does God let little puppies and kittens die?
Of course, all this was just to set things up so I could copy over my prospectus in progress and then write more of it. (Never mind that I haven't been able to install Microsoft word -- the older version we have isn't readable in the external floppy drive [yes, I said older], and the more recent version I borrowed from work turned out not to be helpful because the software CD wasn't actually in the box, only manuals -- and so I had to install MacLinkPlus to convert my prospectus from Word to RTF so I could open it in Appleworks, since I was at least able to copy my prospectus over from a floppy disk that the external drive deigned to read.) If I was really as serious as I should be about writing today, I'd set up J.'s archaic but perfectly functioning PowerBook 520 and type away, maybe even outside. And maybe I will anyway.
Anyone who reacts to my post with knee-jerk anti-Macintosh sentiment deserves a messy death.ss
