*Exactly* like riding a bicycle.
May. 22nd, 2002 10:44 amI hadn't ridden a bicycle since, well, long enough ago that the last time I did it with any regularity there were parental restrictions on where I could ride one. Certainly I hadn't been on one since I moved to New England. But now that J.'s bike is down from New Hampshire, and the landlords have pointed out that we're free to use the spare bicycles in the garage, and, finally, now that the weather is getting nice again (despite two nights in a row of protecting seedlings from frost -- hello, nearly June here), I thought I might start using one for transportation. So yesterday evening I made a trial run on J.'s bike (it being the one most recently tuned up) to the nearest grocery store (or rather the nearest grocery store that isn't a jumped-up convenience store with a deli counter and six kinds of vegetables for sale, but I digress).
It quickly became clear to me that I had never actually ridden a bicycle in anything like real traffic, so that was a bit harrowing. Also, I had forgotten how much I hate bicycle seats. But of course I had no trouble remembering how actually to ride the damn thing, providing anecdotal evidence for the truth of popular wisdom.
And I suppose being aware of traffic is good practice, since a goal for the summer is to get, at long last, my driver's license. (Yes, you heard me.) But in any case I now have a bit more freedom of movement, I think.
