Friday night J. and I went to see the ART's production of Lysistrata. It was a musical. We had expected "play with music," but it was a full-on musical. But that's okay. It was ridiculous, but of course it was supposed to be. Except for the parts that were full of Meaningful Anti-War Content; I assume that those weren't supposed to be as ridiculous as they were. But the chorus of Old Men rocked. And it followed the storyline of Aristophanes' play more faithfully than I expected.

I'm not so sure I could fully recommend it as a use for your spare 20 bucks or more, but I don't regret going.

How's that for an ambivalent review?

Yesterday afternoon we took advantage of the nice weather to drive out to Berlin, MA to visit Balance Rock Farm (a dairy farm) and Berlin Orchards or some such, and came home via Idylwylde Farms in Acton. We accumulated much agricultural goodness: small-farm-raised meat, lots of vegetables, some cheese, that sort of thing. Idylwylde is really a massive independent supermarket with a produce focus that puts, say, Bread and Circus (or Whole Foods or whatever) to shame in its abundant variety. For instance, half a dozen choices for asparagus, combining local vs. out-of-state and conventional vs. organic options. And a mighty cheese counter, although to get there from Salem you go through Concord where there is an impressive cheese shop anyway, but still. Prices were rather high on some things and remarkably low on others. It's about an hour away from us, so we won't go out too often, I imagine, but as a weekend drive destination it beats the hell out of the Wild Oats Market in Saugus on Rte. 1. But of course J. and I can always pick up small amounts of things from the Harvest Coop in Central Square or the natural foods store on Beacon Street near BU, respectively, on weekdays after work.

But where we shop for good produce may not, in fact, interest you quite so much.

And then last night we went to see "Spider-Man," which was diverting. (Though I still don't think CGI animation of human figures in a live-action movie has really arrived yet. It still looks like a damn video game. Also, why do they always kill off the supervillains in comic-book movies? That doesn't seem true to the genre. Except in "X-Men," at least. But I digress. Although this *is* in parentheses...) In a day or two the cheap movie passes J. gets through work will be valid for Episode Two, so presumably that will be our next movie outing some time in the coming weeks.

Tonight we will probably go into Arlington for a gothic-industrial fundraiser party for some friends who will be doing the Boston-NYC AIDS ride. (And you should go, too.) It depends on the timing of a visit from J.'s parents for dinner and Stuff Swapping (for instance, they will be taking away some of our extra tomato seedlings; isn't that fascinating?) as well as on how much work we get done today on our respective projects.

Which means, I suppose, that I'd better get back to mine.
