Alas, such vexations.
So at this time of year, last two years, J. and I have been counting down the days until an end-of-month trip to France. Now, however, I am counting down the days until my dissertation prospectus defense -- a good thing to get done, to be sure, but hardly as entertaining.
(But, as Damiel and others have suggested, perhaps all of this ridiculous anti-France sentiment will result in cheaper airfare thither.)
Last night, J. and I were both feeling generally exhausted and so we watched "Better Off Dead," suggested to us by a weekend skiing and the recent media presence of "French fries, French dressing, French bread (and to drink, Peru!)."
It's one of the best high-school movies ever -- although I get pensive when I realize that there are probably people graduating from high school this year who were born the year it came out.
And now to finish editing a lengthy book review trashing a book by someone who might well have been my advisor if (a) I had stayed on the "late antiquity" track and (b) said would-be-advisor hadn't moved to the other coast.
