Trannies, I am told, know how to party. It says so right under the message advertising "barely angels" who were "created for porno."

But I didn't log in to tell you that: consider it a bonus.

I spent the weekend reading Tacitus' Histories (again), having decided that, my prospectus defense over, the best way to proceed with my work was this, namely, to reread all of Tacitus, both for research purposes and because there is a certain pleasure in it.

Thrill to the actions of angry mobs who often happen to be made up entirely of armed soldiers! Watch as civilian courtiers keep incompetent emperors from heeding military advice given by experienced generals! (I liked that part especially.) Try your hand at the challenging task of keeping track of rapidly shifting loyalties! See three imperial reigns in a row each lasting only a few months!

Every now and then it's nice to put all of the books about literature aside and just read the literature, you know? But of course I still felt compelled now and then to put a post-it note in here or there as something struck me as useful or important.

So here's a good meal for omnivores: Cook tiny lentils (Du Puy lentils are recommended, so we finally used the ones J. bought last year) with chicken stock, onions, a little goose fat (we used duck, since it was there in the fridge), and some sort of smokey ham or bacon; serve just slightly warm over mesclun greens with a walnut oil vinaigrette. Accompany with fresh sourdough bread and a light red wine (the recipe suggests a beaujolais nouveau). Yum. We more or less followed the recipe in Patricia Wells' Paris Cookbook, and had a very similar salad at Chez Clovis near Les Halles last year (which should be in easy range for a lunchtime treat for [livejournal.com profile] mbayard). It is, I think, because of that that J. was so keen on making sure to bring some Du Puy lentils home.

In unhappy news, I have just learned while typing this that my advisor's mother died this morning, and he'll be flying to Munich tomorrow. (The poor man still has to teach a class this afternoon.) It's not really a surprise -- his mother has been doing particularly poorly this last couple of years -- but it's still, of course, very sad. His father is in poor health, also, and this is likely to make him worsen... I met them both once at a "hooray it's over and was a success" dinner party held after the conference in Germany where I worked a few years ago; they seemed very kindly, although we did not have much to talk about, or, at least, we couldn't because of a language barrier.

An anonymous seasonal gift came to J. and me late last week; I sent the following e-mail message to the chief suspects:

The damnedest thing happened the other day -- a chocolate rabbit appeared on our doorstep, apparently offering itself freely for our consumption. It has been mute, however, on its real mission or who it might be working for, so that's only a guess.

To which I received the following reply:

I would suggest using extreme caution with the rabbit. I believe that we are at orange alert status right now, and any responsible citizen would act accordingly. (I am assuming that it is one of those suspect looking "Dark" or "milk" chocolate rabbits and not a cleancut, all-american "white" chocolate rabbit).

You should keep an eye on the bunny and report any unusual activity to the authorities. However, no court would convict you if you decide to punish that bunny bastard for what they did to us on 9/11. Bite the little fucker's head clean off.
