Mowing

My least favorite places to mow are the wide strips of grass between the sidewalk and the street. Ironically, perhaps, these are the easiest in terms of terrain, but they are also neighborhood repositories for beer bottles (and not good brands), fast food trash, and monster piles of dog crap.

I was thinking about a Saturday Night Live sketch from the late '80s; the Devil is on "The People's Court" or something. I've never actually seen the sketch, but one of my college roommates was fond of quoting it. I think from the voice he was using that the Devil was played by Jon Lovitz. "I did not put garbage in your yard! [...] I am Mephistopheles, the Prince of Darkness! When I'm harrassing you, you'll know it!"

My second least favorite place to mow is the area around the garden and in front of it; this is a minefield of potential vegetable damage and has various trees and bushes in the way. There's a strip of grass just wide enough for the lawnmower between the garden and the fence; it needs to be kept mowed, but it's tricky business: peas and a zucchini plant spill over and must be gently removed from the way, and it is not easy to reach around the lawnmower without turning it off or stepping in the peas.

Despite all of these hazards, my mind wanders. I think in my next Changeling game there will be a chimerical robot street gang called the Rude Mechanicals.

Probably been done, though.

The rest of the yard is all about the same. No two square inches are the same elevation; it's tough going. I don't always rake -- if the grass dies, maybe I won't have to mow it next time -- but today I did, at least in the back yard because there was a hell of a lot of cut grass lying there, some of it dry and brittle and yellow, leftover from three weeks ago.

The last time I mowed my neighbor said the next day that I had done a good job. What the hell is that supposed to mean? That I usually don't? That I don't mow enough, and I need positive encouragement? That she just isn't good at conversation?

... Gosh. It's time to go to France, *right now*.
