Edit:

Dammit, what's the point of "altlogin" if it's not going to work?

If you saw something that made no sense, that's because it was intended to go here, a character journal for a LARP.

I suppose now that I have your attention, I can tell you that last night J. and I went to a town meeting related to that homeless shelter thingy I mentioned the other day.

For three hours people ranted for or against the fact that the shelter is moving into a larger church-and-related-buildings site a couple of blocks away. The against people pretend that it will ruin the neighborhood. The President of the council allowed people to speak one by one, moving around the room. All of the "anti" people had come early for the few seats and for mutual support, it seems; the first hour was full of talk of "undesireables" and the criminal homeless and just why are we helping these bums anyway when all they're going to do is piss in our yards and cause ominously unspecified harm to our children? Then for two hours people spoke mostly in favor of the move, with some concerns more reasonably phrased; the "hater" crowd started leaving one by one, and were pretty much all gone by the time the meeting was over.

I myself was, by the random grouping of people and by virtue of where I happened to be standing, among the first to speak in favor of the move (which, incidentally, does not strictly require approval, it seems; the meeting was simply to permit the airing of grievances and the asking of questions), so I was the first to point out the obvious, viz., that the shelter was, like, you know, already right nearby. After that I am sorry to say my train of logic derailed, but J. tells me I was more comprehensible that it seemed to me I must have been; mainly I was, in the face of heckling from one hateful older woman who claimed she had a "constitutional right" to shout down anyone who was not "getting the picture," working to restrain myself from saying that I'd rather live next to people who left bodily waste in my yard than the group of hate- and fearmongers who had spoken before me (and whose dogs are already covering the waste angle nicely anyway).

Good for you for speaking up!

I think I must have missed the part about the right to shout down fellow citizens who don't get the picture back in Civics class...

I missed that, too, but our Civics class was a joke, and

(a) It could have been mentioned by the teacher, Mr. Reall, in between his retellings of his famous hunting stories, so that my brain had already shut down out of boredom; or

(b) It could have come up on a day when we had a substitute, who was too busy dodging bits of baked yam hurled at him by a bodybuilder guy who sat behind me.
