Feb. 22nd, 2002 11:30 amI really hate the kind of pop-up ad that activates my virus protection software and causes Netscape to crash, as just happened when I was trying to check something out on about.com and happens every time I try to look at moviefone.com with Netscape. (It doesn't happen with IE, but I like to think that has more to do with Microsoft's being more ad-friendly, or some other explanation that does not, in the end, redound to IE's credit.)
This is also vexing, for different reasons.
Finally, I'm at work for the third time in a week! This has not happened since December. I will be editing a complicated manuscript with technical annoyances (the electronic version is a TEX file, and I am not conversant in such things; converting them to friendlier formats results in much loss, especially in fonts, and even the TEX-to-PS-to-PDF-via-Distiller thing results in a perfectly viewable, but not editable, document, because even the English text of the article is in an unsupported font). I worry that extensive quotations in Greek will have to be retyped by me, and I have no idea what to do about the Arabic or several mathematical symbols.
I would, however, have been trying to solve this problem much earlier, but I did not realize that I had all of the material at hand. "When [author] sends us everything, then you'll have work to do, but until then there's not much point in coming in," Boss-man has been saying. But I finally discovered yesterday that all we've been waiting for are some last illustrations. We've had everything else since early January.
"We might even be able to be done next week," says Boss-man.
Yeah, only if I work extra days.
This could have been paced better.
