Jun. 4th, 2002 11:04 amJ.'s grandmother broke her hip the other night, which is a source of worry and stress. Said grandmother is recuperating in the hospital post-surgery and in good spirits, so that's hopeful. It's off to NH for us this weekend.
This following in the past week J.'s dad stabbing his hand with a screwdriver -- by accident -- and her year-old niece having a fever high enough to warrant an emergency room visit. Fortunately every one is fine, but that's a lot of emergency room visits for one family in one week. I am reminded of the horrible Christmas a few years ago as we awaited the imminent birth of my niece. And indeed there were many hospital visits in the week between Christmas and New Year's, but none of them involved childbirth. My grandmother fell off our porch steps and broke *her* hip (I can only hope that J.'s grandma is more diligent about physical therapy than mine has been), and while visiting her in the hospital my mom slipped and seriously sprained her ankle. My brother was limping around in a cast because of some accident a few days before I arrived for the holidays. That left, with my imminent return to New England, only my stepfather as the one person over the age of 11 in the house who could walk, but he had pneumonia or something. But they wouldn't hear of my changing my flight.
(My sister had her baby a week after I left.)
---
I don't really want to work in the Athenaeum this afternoon, but at least it should be relatively quiet. I just have to figure out what to take to work on -- more writing involves taking the old laptop and a random assortment of books and articles with me, and that could be tedious. On the other hand, I don't have any really pressing study-related things to read.
I shall figure out something, or else just work on imaginary faerie politics. But I should probably not, in fact, spend my whole afternoon on that...
