Wow -- lots of LJ and list mail to catch up on after five days.

The short version of the long weekend is that J. and I went to Camden, Maine to go camping with her parents. We drove up Thursday, went to the Common Ground fair in Unity on Friday, did some random coastal driving around on Saturday, hiked up a small mountain on Sunday (how could we not see the view from Mount Battie?), and broke camp in pouring rain yesterday morning, after which we drove home on route 1, stopping occasionally for sightseeing, with lunch at the Portland Public Market.

Today I have to work at the Athenaeum, where, if I am not too often interrupted or too easily distracted, I will read a 20-year-old unpublished dissertation relevant to my own dissertation research. Tonight is the Buffy premiere, if we can get our TV to work; since we are both wicked tired from the weekend and I'm not in town today we probably shan't be watching at the home of Silas and Klae, which is unfortunate, but there it is.

Overheard at Common Ground:

Mother: ...this isn't that kind of fair. This is a *learning* fair.
Child: (petulantly) Then why are we here?

Seen at Common Ground:

Lots of people with dreadlocks, people who look like they should be in Fleetwood Mac, one guy in a suit, and a woman wearing (probably organic )undyed linen Turkish pants and a Misfits t-shirt. Oh, and a set of 7 hand-woven baskets costing $14,000.00. Yes, you read that correctly. I didn't buy them.
