An old Classics-L post I had saved but not read from a few months ago led me to that.
It is an argument that apparently evolved from a "who's better, Romans or Greeks" usenet "debate," but at the time we join it it has become (a) an extended exercise in nationalistic folk etymologies to prove that Greece is the mother of all ancient language and civilization and (b) "you're an asshole" "no, you are" "no, you are" "nuh-uh."
Absolutely no one comes off well, even the ones who are not obvious crackpots.
The mind boggles.
