Update 16 minutes later:

Hmm. I take that back: it has been no help at all with determining what year Bd. 14 of Goethes Saemtliche Werke. Jubilaeums-Ausgabe in 40 Bdn., hrsg. v. E. von der Hellen (Berlin 1902-1907) was published. Sadly, this matters in my job.

Obviously one can narrow it down to a five-year period, but that's not good enough. The public deserves better.

Nor is it such that I can simply go and look at the thing on the shelf, as (a) I'm working from home and (b) it's not in the library I have access to anyway.

Oh well. Time to go to the Y soon.

To make any accent marks you have to know the html code. I keep a link (http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/reference/special_characters/) handy at all times for occasions when umlauts and circumflex's are needed.

Hmm. Thing is, I'm sure I've typed such things before without difficulty. (For instance, earlier yesterday I was doing accents in French names and lj didn't balk...)

I see now that it is a browser text-encoding problem. The same text encoding that allows me to search the DB catalog is not the same text encoding that allows me to post wacky forn letters in Livejournal, and vice versa.
