why do people mime athletic activities?

quislibetWhile waiting for the T to take the lazy way out to Packard's Corner at lunch I noticed a fellow passenger-to-be repeating something that may have been a martial arts move, or may have been the swing of a chimerical baseball bat. He looked like he was caught in a time loop as in one of 65 different Star Trek episodes. Or just looped, period.
The other day at the campus convenience store a 40-something guy with an uncanny resemblance to the late Phil Hartman was in line ahead of me buying pens, which he was using for imaginary golf swings while head-bopping to the classic rock.
No sports were involved, but my penance for taking a two-hour lunch was to sit across from someone on the return ride to work who was listening to Bob Marley on his headphones and singing along to random phrases here and there in a strangling falsetto.
It was a good lunch, though.
Hope to see some of you at Pancake's Sendoff (Part One) this evening. J. and I may also try to go to Generic Fetish Night at Man Ray after a bit. If you're going to the Second Circle, bring some black clothes. Maybe we should dress Scotty in dark pleather and parade him in front of the "Stuff @ Night" staffers who will be at the club seeking people to put in their "Spring Guerrilla Fashion" issue.
