It's really all about taking the simple step of double-checking the word you get in the English-Latin half with the entry in the Latin-English part...

*chuckle* Dictionaries are insidious things. Of course, other ways of learning can be just as fraugt-filled. I know a number of people who have learned Japanese through anime... and don't seem to realize that some characters are given distinctive regional accents, or more importantly, that there are differences in verb endings depending on your sex. *wince* Either is a good way to win yourself a comedy circuit in Japan.

Yessss, but. See, I learned Japanese via manga and anime myself. I think the main difference for me was alreading having a degree in Latin, which has its own definite patterns of construction. One thing I've noticed with people who've taken a 'real' course is that their Japanese is stilted... they're always, always taught business Japanese, which is fairly different from colloquial.

I've given talks at anime conventions based just on the word 'I' in Japanese. ^___^ I won't clog quislibet journal (sorry!) with it... But I've found that people after they've had just that small lesson look at anime quite differently. It's a good thing.

I'd reply in Latin, but it's past midnight here in the UK, and I'm not awake enough. If you 'friend me, I posted my BA illustration dissertation (why stop at one degree!) on the Gothic and Lolita movement in Japan, with a quick and dirty translation. With pictures!

The link is pretty spot on! I hadn't seen that one before. Excellent stuff... I think the only thing I would add is a small commentary on sex and verbal endings, and special thing on the universal use of -ne.

...which I always get confused with the Latin use of -ne, and await a positive answer.

I can see the dis without friending you (since you friended me), but I'll friend you anyway. I'll print that out next time I'm on campus (i.e. tomorrow). When it comes to long texts, I prefer hard copies.

"Sex and Verbal Endings" would make an excellent title for a trendy article. I'm thinking in a normal magazine, but it might even work for a scholarly journal.

Yeah, I like the Japanese ne for that reason. When I'm speaking Latin I tend to use annon as the equivalent (or rather the equivalent of the semi-English "no?"), but this doesn't seem to be classical.

And you didn't so much misspell quislibet as forget to add that genitive suffix. That's OK, we'll take it as an adjective (honestly I had not noticed). I made some mistakes in my Latin too (e.g. acroasi tua audito?? Heu!) but what can you do, this is afterall the internet.
