vexations

So much to do today, and I'm being swamped with more and more every few minutes. The brand new pile of things that need to be done fairly urgently here at work have already been buried in a pile of things twice as large; not everything is urgent, but if I don't do them right away they'll just sit in a growing pile, so it's best to do them.

Meanwhile, a host of phone calls and paperwork-gathering-and-completing activities necessary for my visa application are not being done, as these are personal and I'm being paid to do all the other stuff. I'm not looking forward to my visit to the French consulate tomorrow morning where I have to wave my assembled materials in front of them, say that no, I don't in fact have an address in France yet, but I will before I go, but I don't have it NOW, it's just that I need the visa before I leave and I'm leaving in a couple days short of 2 months and apparently visa applications can take three, and certain materials necessary to the visa application have only just become available to me in the last day or three, so there. And I'm sorry you hate my President, but don't take it out on me.

This, I have to say, is the worst possible week my co-worker could have taken vacation time, as I have to do all the correspondence he normally takes care of, which is endless.

Now, certainly I'm sure my co-worker would have been happier not to have to take this week off to go spend time with his brother before said brother gets shipped off to fight or keep peace or whatever it is that we're doing in Iraq, so it's impossible to blame the co-worker for these relatively minor annoyances. I will therefore blame the President for everything that is wrong in my life right now, and get back to work.

I'm sure your visit to the consulate will be fine - I find French bureaucrats easier to deal with than most. One thing you might consider is having a temporary address ready to give them in case they insist they can't process the form if it has a blank in it - a hotel or youth hostel you can stay in the first night. Good luck!

Alas, I would in fact need a letter from a hotel or hostel stating that I had arranged to live there for the year, apparently.

J. has already got her visa (as of yesterday); they ended up giving her a student one because she didn't have an address -- even though she doesn't have any sort of school affiliation there in France, so it's kind of random what is and isn't absolutely necessary. I'm hoping that with her visa (or a copy) in hand and a copy of our marriage license I can get them to do the same for me.
