Dinner last night: Korean sesame turkey patties with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, sugar, scallions, garlic, and toasted sesame seeds. Stir-fried snowpeas and bok choy from our garden. Rice. Salad greens from the CSA (Marblehead Eco-Farms Farm Direct Coop), spiced up by our own arugula. Buzzard's Bay porter, and a Breton brown beer we brought back from our trip that "flirted with bitterness in the finish" (as J. put it, fully aware of how it sounded) but turned out to be only teasing.

A little ice cream later on, of course.

After-dinner entertainment: indexing J.'s book about New England food. She reads: "Apples. Page 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 25, 27, 32, 38, 46, 48, 49, 50, 76...." or the like as I type.

"Maple" was the worst. Better to list the pages that didn't mention it.

Given that you're still working on apple, perhaps it's still early enough to let you know that there are programs that will do book indexing for you automatically.

Alas:

(1) We are in fact past maple at the moment, as I mentioned.

(2) We are working with hardcopy galley proofs provided by the publisher.

(3) The index needs to be done sooner than the time it would take, even if we had an electronic copy of the proofs, to buy the proper software and learn to use it.

Anyway, we are working particularly on the index of foods; I'm not sure how clever any indexing software would be at going through the manuscript and selecting only foods, at least without missing uncommon ones (like cretons or Myfanwy's Blue [a cheese]).
