So today before the exam we were forced to watch the classic driver's ed scare flick Highways of Agony. It is, first of all, problematic to show with serious intention a more-than-thirty-year-old film that has become an ironic cult hit that can be grouped with "Duck and Cover." More than that, however, I am not convinced that showing real charred corpses and crumpled automobiles (even with our substitute instructor's admonition [I think the regular one just didn't want to see the film for the umpteenth time] that accidents are much worse now because cars are smaller and lighter) will have the desired effect. The weak-stomached won't watch; those who are fascinated with the images won't necessarily learn; and those of us in the middle will find an ironic distancing refuge in the overly dramatic classical music and cheesy, stern narration.

Further, kids tend to think they're immortal anyway, despite the evidence. I, however, who am older and more cautious and have been infected by my mother's "call me when you get there" mentality, have merely had confirmation for my occasional morbid fears, so that perhaps I will be that much more worried the next time J. is later getting home than I expected -- and have appropriate mental images at hand.

Anyway, the class is over except for the driving time, and the exam was easy enough except that I didn't memorize the penalties for underage open-container violations as well as it appears I should have.

I have been catching up with my mail and journal reading from the past week...

When I was a lad, I earned a watch in the Read-a-thon. I still have it somewhere -- it's red, and the canine mascot appears on the watch face. I wish that there was more I could do, or that I had greater stamina for bike-riding, or whatever. But I can offer my thoughts and prayers and best wishes.

Those also go out to my "childe" of years ago. Be strong.

Now to end on an a geeky up note -- I noted to my surprise and delight the existence of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" volume 2, issue 1 yesterday, and promptly purchased the thing. It rocks, showing that the growing tedium of "Promethea" does not mean that Mr. Moore has lost his touch.

I meant to put a link or two there, but the first few links I could find before I got lazy were all about the movie loosely based on LoEG volume 1 that began filming earlier this month. The presence of Mr. Connery does not necessarily imply greatness in a film, of course, but I would nonetheless be hopeful if it weren't for the addition of the character of Tom Sawyer. Ugh.

I had a weird dream but all I can remember about it is that Dubya pissed himself.

Thank you, if that one was for me.

Yup.

Gee that one sounds like a real pisser of a dream.

The real pisser is that I can't remember more of it. I think there were space aliens, too.
