Did you know that there is no favorable or flattering reference to female genitalia anywhere in extant Latin literature?

How about that.

no flowers? nothing?

Sad thing. So I guess we do live in enlightened times. Frightening thought.

I'm sure the Vatican has aplenty. They're not the type to share, though.

this is the vatican we're talking about. they won't allow women in the priesthood much less pay them a kind word for anything other than their chastity. what a bunch of lunatics and they're supposed to keep morality in check?

They're hiding those blasphemous materials for mankind's good! Only such chaste, godfearing people as His Popiness can handle porn without it affecting their morality.

Are you sure? I remember a few choice poems about soft, nibbly parts from various lonely medieval poets.

I'll have to see if I still have the translations. They were quite full of, er, praise.

I am not, in fact, sure; I was summarizing something I read in an article about women in Roman satire. If true, the statement may apply only to ancient, as opposed to medieval, literature, or it may be the result of a judgment call on the part of the author of the article as to what is flattering or not.

I've long been a fan of Steeleye Span -- I suppose I could add them to my interests -- and a friend told me I might like various other bands, and eventually I stumbled onto Tri Yann on a compilation of music from Brittany.

I pretty much limit my friends list to people I know in person, though -- meaning no offense.

what about Catullus' sparrow poem? My college Latin prof said that sparrow could also be slang for female genitalia and so the poem had a double meaning.

I think "passer" (sparrow) was more slang for the boy bits (cf. "cock"). Hence that Catullus' girlfriend is bummed because the sparrow she used to love and caress is dead now has suggested to many that the poet's persona is admitting to a problem getting it up.

Anyway, "weep, for my girlfriend's [...] is dead" wouldn't necessarily be a flattering reference!
