Wedding dresses; puppets
Dec. 3rd, 2001 12:37 pmThanks to Ms_Ntropy, I was looking over some old game-geek pictures from a few years ago, for that nostalgia factor.
Am I not beautiful and radiant?

In other news, my weekend of study was not so studious. But is it ever, really, when you get right down to it? Saturday seemed promising, but the realities of train schedules made our evening jaunt into Boston an earlier interruption to the work day than we thought. We saw a rather curious antiwar puppet show, then met some friends for Afghanistan's finest cuisine at The Helmand in Cambridge. It seemed somehow a good double-feature of a night out. I recommend The Helmand heartily. I cannot recommend it without reservations, however: Without reservations, the wait can be 90 minutes on a Saturday night.
At the puppet show I noticed some people were leaving during the least satirical and most bitter and angry anti-war portions, which makes me wonder what they thought they were getting into when they came to the performance -- although those were my least favorite parts too. It was a useful counterbalance to the opposite extreme (I saw a loathsome letter in last week's TIME magazine calling on the President to promise nuclear obliteration of terrorist-harboring countries should there ever be just one more American citizen killed in a terrorist attack), but on the anti-war side I would like to see more constructive alternative suggestions beyond "capitalism is bad." I suppose that the offering of alternatives is not always the function of protest, but it might be more useful if it did...
Yesterday's studies were interrupted by working at the Athenaeum for a lecture on "Pragmatism and War" by Louis Menand, taking tickets and then helping at a reception afterwards. It ate up most of the evening. And I ate up a lot of reception food, so that J. (who was also helping with the lecture) and I chose not to make a real dinner, but just to skip to dessert and have hot fudge sundaes at Puleo's.
