It seems that trying to hook up J.'s old PowerBook to her new iBook for data transfer might not be necessary after all, as the old PowerBook seems to have died today and won't restart.

did you try the secret key combo to reset the power supply (or something. that is if it's a wallstreet g3 or newer). that makes a whirring noise, the power light goes on, and then after a little while you should be able to restart it.

It's a PowerBook 540. (Hey, I said it was old.) It starts with "Happy Mac" but makes a ticking sound and goes quickly to the question mark. It does the same with extensions off, and when I try to start up from the utilities disk it gets a few screens in and just stops loading, displaying the clock (which is moveable, so it hasn't frozen) for at least an hour (after that I gave up).

I'll bring it to my office at BU and get it to you. It'd be spiffy if you get a chance to look at it.

Yeah, no prob- just let me know when you have it on campus, and we can figure it out from there. Assuming I can get it to go, I should be able to just dump the files onto a CD for you, which will also make the moving-to-the-iBook easier. The down side is that this may well be a hard drive problem, which would suck.
