I've just realized, in the unsuccessful process of trying to locate a library copy, that I don't mean Jane Yolen's Tam Lin, but rather Pamela Dean's. Yolen's is an illustrated version based more faithfully on the original ballad, for kids, and I haven't ever read it.

I point this out mainly because a couple of you were going to read it, based solely on my recommendation. I apologize if you've spent money on it. Although I'm sure Yolen's is absolutely charming and delightful.

Authors in the same circle of writers shouldn't write books with the same title. It confuses one, if one is dorky enough to be aware of such connections.

Thanks for the clairifiction! :) Though I do love Jane Yolen's work so I'm sure I would have been fine with that one too. Now I'm thinking I should get both of them to see the differences.
Can you tell I am a paper-writing geek? ;)

Actually, I think Pamela Dean's was the one I was complaining about.

i didn't like pamela dean's version of the story at all. it was horribly dull. but i highly recommend a more modern retelling of the story by diana wynne jones called fire and hemlock. i have a copy of the book that you are welcome to borrow if you wish.
